I just wanted to stand on my soapbox for a second. As Christmas draws near a lot of people will be thinking of bringing a pet home for Christmas. I just want to say, as the owner of 2 rescued dogs ( and one fat and spoiled since its birth lol), adopting from a shelter or rescue organization is by far one of the most compassionate and rewarding experiences one can have.
Shelter and rescue dogs are not bad or second hand dogs, they are just looking for a happy, forever home. When we adopted our newest addition from Best Friends Animal Society we knew we had found something special. Mimi had been brought into the pound and rescued by Robin Harmon of Best Friends Animal Society when her and her littermates were only 6 weeks old. When they were brought to the vet (where they would stay until a foster home or adoptive home came along) they all had very severe mange. Mimi had mange so bad that she was almost completely bald and was red all over. Best Friends got her up and healthy again and before long they all were ready to be shown to potential adopters. I went to volunteer my first Best Friends adoption event I was given a small puppy to show and was told that she might be scared because she didn’t like men. So I picked her up and held her for about 3 hours while I walked around and showed her off. She was so endeasring that I never put her down. That day as I took Mimi home to foster her, Laura and I decided that we would not be able to give her up if she got adopted, so we adopted her. Since then she has been an amazing addition to the family. She loves walks and will always curl up in a nice warm pile of laundry whenever possible.
To make a long story longer, please, if you are thinking of bringing home a pet this Christmas, adopt.
